North Sails

North's introduction to the Moth racing scene began in January 2009 with the Australian Championships, where Nathan Outteridge from Australia went on to win overall in an extremely competitive International fleet.

America's Cup Sail Designer Chris Williams from North Sails USA, chose to design a radial layout for a smoother shape and camber distribution across the entire sail.

"With the extra luff round and more shape control the sail stays draft forward when downhaul is applied" Chris says. "This gives more control and performance upwind and downwind."

"We have also raised the clew quite a bit to allow the mast to be raked back a lot more than normal, which reduces any lee-helm effect."

Chris also says that "we have also designed the head so it is a wider and taller than most other Moth sails on the market, allowing for more power generation in lighter winds. But in the higher winds, wider head flattens right off, but will not go loose or fall off too, which means you will be able to sail much higher than normal."

Besides shape control the other benefit is the weight. Using Technora ODL04 Mylar/Kevlar cloth and fiberglass battens, the sails weigh around 3kgs with cams - that's around 1kg lighter than most other Moth sails on the market.

Another of the unique features included is a webbing loop neatly hidden inside the bottom of the pocket luff for the Cunningham blocks to attach- helping to prevent the shape in the lower part of the sail from distorting and evenly tightening the luff sleeve helping to keep the cams on the mast.

The popular V8 sail is suited to all Moth masts ranging from 50-40mm, particularly the 50mm Bladerider mast, the 40mm high modulus 353 CST masts and the new 40mm high modulus Southern Spars masts. However the V8 sail also gives more high range and power if using a stiffer mast such as the Southern Spars 'Phatboy' or the CST 354.

We also provide the option to supply the sail with a set of narrow cams (if you have a mast smaller than 40mm) or the traditional wide cams to suit a 50mm mast diameter.
